Origins of Mistar Urdd
The Urdd movement was founded on 25 January 1922, but it was not until the 1940s that the distinctive red, white, and green triangular logo was created.
It was only in the 1970s that the logo was given a face, arms, and legs, resulting in the unforgettable character known as Mistar Urdd.
This month marks the 50th birthday of one of Wales's most prominent icons, Mistar Urdd.
On 20 February 1976, the small red, white, and green character was brought to life and has since been a favourite among Welsh children for half a century.
Mistar Urdd was created by Wynne Melville Jones (Wyn Mel), who was working as the Publicity Officer for the Urdd at the time.
In an effort to bring the movement closer to young people and refresh its image, Wyn added a face, arms, and legs to the Urdd's triangular logo, giving life to a character that would become a symbol of Welsh youth pride.

Mistar Urdd and His Creator
Over the years, Mistar Urdd has appeared on a wide range of items, from socks and pajamas to phone cases and television programmes. He has been a visible presence at sporting events and, naturally, at Eisteddfodau.
In 1998, Mistar Urdd travelled to space, helping the Urdd break a World Record during the centenary celebrations of the movement.
Recently, a new train vehicle was named after him by the First Minister of Wales, Eluned Morgan.

Discussing his creation, Wyn Mel said:
"I had the opportunity to develop new ideas for the Urdd to appeal to a new generation of youth, and 50 years later, Mistar Urdd remains a favourite among the children and young people of the country."

"I can say wholeheartedly that all the hard work has paid off, and today the Urdd is recognised as one of the best youth organisations in the world."

Significance and Impact
Siân Lewis, Chief Executive of Urdd Gobaith Cymru, stated:
"Mistar Urdd has remained close to the hearts of the Welsh people for 50 years, and that is something to be proud of.
"The character has evolved to become a symbol of hope and represents the friendship, fun, and pride that we, as Wales's largest youth organisation, share with children and young people across the country."
The Urdd also highlights that Mistar Urdd is a symbol of warm welcome and inclusion, for Welsh speakers and learners alike.
"He also plays a key role in opening doors to the Welsh language and demonstrating that the Urdd belongs to everyone," said Siân Lewis. "By extending a warm welcome to new audiences, new speakers, and families from all backgrounds."

50th Anniversary Celebrations
As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, the Urdd will launch a series of projects, including a new version of the anthem Hei Mistar Urdd!.
The original song was composed by Geraint Davies in 1977 and sung by Emyr Wyn, but the new version will be performed by Aleighcia Scott.
A new public mural will also be unveiled in Aberystwyth in partnership with artist Pete Fowler, and there will be a special event as part of this year's St David's Day celebrations.
"Collaborating with Welsh creative talents on the new version of Hei Mistar Urdd!, along with the new mural, is a great start to a year of celebrating this milestone," said Siân Lewis.

Mistar Urdd in Sports and National Celebrations
Mistar Urdd is also a prominent figure in Welsh sports, with Urdd teams competing in rugby, football, netball, and other championships, achieving international success.

1922 was a significant year for the Urdd as the organisation celebrated its 100th anniversary. Mistar Urdd played a leading role in the celebrations throughout the year.

With recent successes of Wales's national football teams, Mistar Urdd has been at the heart of celebrations.
The men's team reached Euro 2016, Euro 2020, and the 2022 World Cup, while the women's team qualified for the Euro 2025 championships. Mistar Urdd was present supporting every kick.

It has been 50 successful years serving the nation for Mistar Urdd, with best wishes for the next 50 years!
