UK Government Borrowing Surpasses Forecasts in April

The UK government borrowed more than anticipated in April, according to the most recent official data.

Borrowing, defined as the difference between government spending and income from taxes, reached £24.3bn last month. This amount is £4.9bn higher than the borrowing recorded at the same time last year, as reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The borrowing figure also exceeded the £20.9bn forecasted by the government's independent forecaster, the Office for Budget Responsibility.

Grant Fitzner, the chief economist at the ONS, commented on the figures:

"While tax receipts had risen in April from a year earlier, this was more than offset by higher spending on benefits and other costs".
