SSE Airtricity Announces Gas Price Reduction

Northern Ireland's largest natural gas supplier, SSE Airtricity, will reduce its gas prices by 8.10% effective from 1 April. This price cut will affect approximately 215,000 domestic and small business customers.

For a typical household located in the greater Belfast and west gas areas with a credit meter, this reduction translates to an annual saving of £80 on their gas bill.

Customers using prepayment gas meters will also benefit, with typical costs decreasing by around £79 annually.

Industry Reactions to the Price Cut

Raymond Gormley, head of energy policy at the Consumer Council, welcomed the decrease, noting its positive implications for consumers.

"It indicates a gradual downward curve in wholesale energy prices,"

he said.

"However, the energy market does continue to remain volatile due to ongoing global geopolitical concerns."

The Utility Regulator also expressed approval of the price reduction, attributing it to a decline in wholesale gas costs.

Leigh Greer, head of market regulation at the Utility Regulator, emphasized their commitment to monitoring regulated tariffs to ensure that any further cost decreases are passed on to customers.

"While this is good news for consumers, we recognise many households and businesses are still struggling,"

he stated.

"If you are worried about paying for your electricity or gas, help is available."

Upcoming Tariff Announcements

An announcement regarding Firmus Energy's regulated gas tariff is anticipated within the next week.
