Spirit Airlines Prepares to Cease Operations

Spirit Airlines is preparing to cease operations after the company exhausted its cash reserves and a rescue effort by the Trump administration stalled. The airline has been unable to reach an agreement with its creditors or secure the necessary funding to continue operations, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal citing sources familiar with the situation.

Earlier reports indicated that Spirit was nearing liquidation. In response, the Trump administration expressed intentions to support the carrier, including a potential $500 million loan from the federal government.

“We’re thinking about doing it, helping them out, meaning bailing them out, or buying it,” Trump said, adding that the government could “sell it for a profit” when prices come down.

If Spirit Airlines proceeds with liquidation, it would mark the first major U.S. airline to do so since the 2008 recession.

Challenges Facing Spirit Airlines

Spirit, along with other airlines, has been grappling with elevated oil prices, which have significantly increased jet fuel costs. However, the airline’s difficulties began prior to the conflict in Iran, as it struggled to boost demand following the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2024, a federal judge blocked a $3.8 billion merger between JetBlue and Spirit on antitrust grounds, ruling that the merger would reduce competition in the airline industry and negatively impact customers.

The White House previously stated that Spirit Airlines would have been in a stronger financial position if the Biden administration had not blocked the merger with JetBlue, describing the decision as reckless.

Requests for comment from Spirit Airlines and the White House were not immediately returned.
