Whitbread Announces Job Cuts and Strategic Overhaul

The owner of Premier Inn, Whitbread, has announced plans to reduce its workforce by 3,800 jobs across the UK and Ireland as part of a comprehensive five-year strategy aimed at saving £250 million and revamping its restaurant operations.

Headquartered in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, Whitbread also revealed intentions to modify its food service approach and reduce £1 billion from its capital building expenditure.

Specifically, restaurants in 197 hotels will be replaced with an "integrated food and drink model," which the company states will enhance efficiency and align with guest preferences.

CEO Comments on Financial Pressures and Strategic Direction

Dominic Paul, Chief Executive Officer of Whitbread, highlighted that rising expenses, including business rates and national insurance contributions, necessitate these changes within the UK's largest hotel chain.

"We've looked hard at the options open to us to maximise value creation over the medium and long-term," he said.
"This has been a rigorous process and we've approached all options with an open mind.
Our new five-year plan builds on our strengths and drives a significant acceleration of our strategy."

Employment Impact and Previous Redundancies

Whitbread employs approximately 30,000 individuals and indicated that the proposed plans are subject to staff consultation. The company expects to retain a significant portion of those affected through redeployment efforts.

In recent years, Whitbread has implemented workforce reductions, including 88 redundancies last year following the relocation of a call centre to Egypt, and a further 1,500 job cuts in 2024.

Financial Performance

The announcement follows the release of Whitbread's financial results, which reported a pre-tax profit of £298 million for the year ending 26 February. This figure represents a 19% decrease compared to the previous year.
