Lloyds Banking Group Announces Closure of 95 Branches
Lloyds Banking Group has revealed plans to close an additional 95 branches amid a broader trend of banks reducing their physical presence on the High Street.
The closures will affect 53 Lloyds, 31 Halifax, and 11 Bank of Scotland branches, scheduled to take place between May 2024 and March 2027.
As the largest banking group in the UK, Lloyds emphasized that it provides customers with various options to manage their finances.
This announcement supplements an ongoing closure program that will see 49 branches shut by October 2024.
Following the completion of these closures, Lloyds will maintain 610 branches across the country.
"Customers want the freedom to bank in the way that works for them and we offer more choice and ways to manage money than ever before."
A Lloyds spokesperson highlighted that over 21 million customers primarily use Lloyds' mobile applications for banking services.
In a related development, Santander recently announced the closure of 44 branches, putting 291 jobs at risk.
The rise of banking apps and the expansion of remote services have contributed to decreased branch usage, prompting closure programs across the UK banking sector.
Conversely, the Nationwide Building Society, the UK's largest building society, committed late last year to keeping all 696 of its branches open until at least 2030, despite having closed branches previously.
Banking hubs, where multiple banks share premises to serve a broad customer base, have been introduced. Although some new hubs have opened, their growth has not matched the rate of individual branch closures.
