Conflict Emerges Over New York Wealth Tax Proposal

A dispute has developed between New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and billionaire hedge fund founder Ken Griffin regarding the mayor's commitment to "tax the rich." Griffin, who is the founder and CEO of Citadel and owns the most expensive apartment in the United States, criticized Mamdani's stance, stating that the mayor is "making it really clear: New York doesn't welcome success."

Griffin indicated that he would intensify his focus on expanding his business interests in Miami rather than Manhattan.

Mamdani's Video and Griffin's Reaction

In April, Mamdani recorded a video outside Griffin's New York penthouse to advocate for a new tax on luxury properties within the city. Speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California, on Tuesday, Griffin described Mamdani's video as "creepy and weird."

"Anything that creates, like an agitation, in the extremist on either side of the aisle is a frightening dynamic," Griffin said, also expressing concerns about security risks. He referenced the nearby fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson as an example of potential dangers.

Official Response from Mamdani's Office

Later the same day, Mamdani's press secretary, Joe Calvello, responded to Griffin's comments in a statement to the Wall Street Journal. Calvello emphasized that the mayor aims for success among all New Yorkers and acknowledged the contributions of business owners and entrepreneurs who "make this city the economic engine of America."

"It also includes Ken Griffin, who is a major employer in our city and a powerful figure in our economy," Calvello stated. He added, "That does not negate the fact, however, that our tax system is fundamentally broken."

Details of the Proposed Pied-à-Terre Tax

Mamdani's video, released to coincide with tax day, outlined the implementation of a pied-à-terre tax, an annual fee on properties valued over $5 million (£3.7 million) in New York City. The tax is expected to generate at least $500 million.

In the video, Mamdani said, "When I ran for mayor, I said I was going to tax the rich. Well, today, we're taxing the rich."

The tax specifically targets individuals who "store their wealth in New York City real estate but don't actually live here." While standing in front of Griffin's penthouse building, Mamdani highlighted the property, noting that Griffin purchased the penthouse for $238 million in 2019, making it the most expensive property purchase in the United States to date.

Broader Tax Proposals and Public Debate

Mamdani has proposed that raising taxes on the wealthy could generate up to $9 billion to support his agenda, which also includes increasing the corporate tax rate from 7.25% to 11.5%.

However, these proposals have sparked debate. Critics argue that higher taxes on the wealthy may drive business leaders out of New York City, potentially reducing overall tax revenue.

The mayor's office has been contacted for further comment.
