Heating Oil Users Claim Suppliers Are Exploiting Crisis
A man from Surrey has expressed concerns to the BBC that individuals dependent on heating oil are being "held to ransom" by suppliers amid rising costs.
Keith Bainbridge, residing in Virginia Water, Surrey, reported that the price of his heating oil had more than doubled following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East.
"It is scandalous," he stated. "In times of crisis you can expect some increases, but for heating oil this has been exorbitant. We're being taken for a ride."
The UK and Ireland Fuel Distributors Association responded by stating that its members are doing "everything they can" to support households heated by oil during this volatile market period.
The association explained that fluctuations in wholesale prices are quickly reflected in customer prices because distributors purchase oil almost daily.
"We have also seen a very large and unexpected increase in demand," the trade association added.
Bainbridge told the BBC he is currently avoiding using his heating oil and has decided not to purchase any more at this time.
"I don't know how long this is going to go on for," he said.
'We're Already Struggling'
Jason Barge spoke to BBC Radio Kent about the recent "ridiculous" price increases affecting both his home and his business, which rely on heating oil.
"We've got to budget now for an extra nearly £1,000 a tank," he said. "It's quite a lot of money to find."
Barge highlighted that the rising costs are placing "real pressure" on his mechanics at the Old Station Garage in Horsmonden.
"We're already struggling as it is. The cost of help. The cost of electricity. Everything's all going up," he added.
According to the Competition and Markets Authority, approximately 1.5 million homes in the UK use oil for heating instead of gas.
The government body has received complaints indicating that heating oil suppliers are cancelling orders and subsequently offering customers new quotes at significantly increased prices.
There have also been reports of price hikes for automated deliveries, which are triggered when fuel tank levels fall below certain thresholds.
Calls for Government Action
John Milne, the Member of Parliament for Horsham in West Sussex, noted that heating oil users are often older, more vulnerable individuals living in rural areas.
He urged the government to temporarily remove value added tax (VAT) on heating oil to alleviate the financial burden.
Milne also advocated for a mechanism similar to the Ofgem price cap, which limits the maximum charges energy suppliers can impose, to help "control price shocks in the future."
"The price gouging we are seeing is totally unacceptable," said Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves.
"Whether it is petrol at the pumps or heating oil, there is no excuse for any business to use this as an opportunity to rip off customers."
