Goldsmith and Brother Ben Major Investors in trkradio
The former Conservative minister Zac Goldsmith is set to launch a new sports radio station, trkradio, ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
The Track Radio Corporation reportedly received a licence from Ofcom last week, with Zac Goldsmith and his brother Ben, who is a financier and environmentalist, acting as the principal investors.
Launch and Programming Details
Trkradio is scheduled to begin broadcasting next month. The station’s presenters and additional financial backers are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Sources involved in the launch informed that the station aims to offer a blend of thoughtful discussions covering a wide range of sports. The programming intends to go beyond traditional football phone-ins and will also include music.
Management and Market Position
The daily operations of trkradio will be overseen by Iain Macintosh, formerly head of UK audio at The Athletic, alongside Jonathan Arendt, the former commercial director at LBC.
Trkradio will enter a competitive sports radio market currently dominated by the BBC’s Radio 5 Live and Radio 5 Sports Extra, as well as TalkSport, which has maintained two channels for over ten years.
Context and Upcoming World Cup
Zac Goldsmith has previously expressed criticism of the government led by Rishi Sunak, citing what he described as its “apathy” towards environmental issues.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, is set to commence on 11 June, with the final scheduled for 19 July.
