Historic Dundee Joinery Firm Liquidated
Dundee-based construction company Alexander Oastler Ltd, a specialist in joinery, has been placed into liquidation, resulting in the loss of all 23 jobs. Founded in 1863, the firm operated from its premises on Douglas Street and was known for refurbishment projects as well as bespoke manufacturing of furniture, windows, and doors.
Challenges Leading to Liquidation
Liquidators from Interpath reported that the company faced difficult trading conditions, which were intensified by rising input costs and a decline in housebuilding activity. Despite efforts by the company's director to improve performance, these measures were insufficient to reverse the financial decline.
"Various steps"
were taken by the director to enhance the firm's performance, but he was
"ultimately unable to turn around the company's financial position."
Notable Projects
Alexander Oastler Ltd's portfolio included significant projects such as work on the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and the refurbishment of DC Thomson's Dundee Meadowside headquarters.
Comments from Liquidators
Alistair McAlinden, joint provisional liquidator and head of Interpath in Scotland, acknowledged the company's extensive history.
"The company had a 'long and storied history'.
He further commented on the pressures faced by the business:
"Sadly, however, the headwinds facing companies across the construction and adjacent sectors have placed significant pressures on the business.
Continual losses incurred over the last three years have ultimately meant that the company had no option but to cease trading."
