Anthropic Challenges OpenAI with Bold Ad Campaign
The Seahawks and the Patriots aren’t the only ones preparing for a showdown. Rival AI companies Anthropic and OpenAI have initiated a battle of advertisements aimed at capturing corporate America's attention during one of the year's biggest entertainment events.
In anticipation of the event, Anthropic launched a series of ads targeting its competitor. These ads feature humorous scenarios: for the 23-year-old seeking six-pack abs, there are insoles designed to “help short kings stand tall” with the tagline “confidence isn’t just built in the gym.” Another ad features a man attempting to improve communication with his mother, promoting a mature dating site that connects “sensitive cubs with roaring cougars” in case he cannot mend that relationship.
All four advertisements conclude with the tagline:
“Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.”While OpenAI is not explicitly named, the implication is evident.

OpenAI’s Response and Sam Altman’s Critique
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded with a mix of amusement and criticism. He described the ads as
“so clearly dishonest”before providing a detailed rebuttal.
Altman emphasized OpenAI’s advertising principles, stating:
“Our most important principle for ads says that we won’t do exactly this; we would obviously never run ads in the way Anthropic depicts them. We are not stupid and we know our users would reject that.”
He further explained that OpenAI’s decision to incorporate ads, announced recently, aims to make the product more accessible.
“We believe everyone deserves to use AI and are committed to free access,”Altman wrote. He also took the opportunity to highlight OpenAI’s broader mission:
“Anthropic serves an expensive product to rich people. We are glad they do that and we are doing that too, but we also feel strongly that we need to bring AI to billions of people who can’t pay for subscriptions.”(Claude, Anthropic’s chatbot, also offers a subscription plan.)
Details on ChatGPT’s Advertising Policy
Although ChatGPT’s ad policy is not yet active, OpenAI maintains that ads will be
“separate and clearly labeled”and will not influence the responses users receive. The company assures users that conversations will not be shared with advertisers and emphasizes a commitment to trust. Users will have options to disable personalization or choose an ad-free paid plan.
Initially, ads will appear at the bottom of answers
“when there’s a relevant ad based on your current conversation.”
Altman acknowledged that he was initially skeptical about including ads in ChatGPT’s business model. In October 2024, he dismissed the idea as a
“bad idea.”However, as OpenAI has increased investments in AI infrastructure, the company’s stance has evolved.
Anthropic’s Origins and Opposition to Ads
Anthropic’s criticism of OpenAI is rooted in its origins. Founded by former OpenAI researchers who departed due to concerns about the company’s direction, Anthropic has taken a clear stance against ads in AI chatbots.
In a February 4 blog post, Anthropic stated that Claude would remain ad-free because ads would undermine the chatbot’s role as a
“genuinely helpful assistant for work and for deep thinking.”The company compared open-ended AI conversations, often personal or complex, to interactions with a trusted adviser, noting:
“The appearance of ads in these contexts would feel incongruous – and, in many cases, inappropriate.”
Concerns and Potential Implications of Targeted Advertising
While OpenAI asserts it will not share user data directly with advertisers, targeted advertising has faced criticism for exploiting user vulnerabilities. This concern extends to users discussing sensitive topics such as mental and physical health with ChatGPT, as highlighted in Anthropic’s ads.
Conversely, targeted advertising might contribute to moderating AI’s most harmful content, as major advertisers may withdraw support in response to hateful or egregious material. Many popular platforms, including Google and Instagram, already incorporate ads, so users might not find this a significant change.
Future Outlook: User Preferences and Market Impact
It remains uncertain whether OpenAI’s introduction of ads will drive users toward ad-free competitors. Anthropic is betting that it will.
