New Members Invited to Join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
Jacob Elordi, Jenna Ortega, and Stephen Fry are among the 529 creatives invited to join this year’s member class of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
“We are delighted to invite this remarkable group of film artists and professionals from around the world to join the Academy,” said CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Lynette Howell Taylor in a statement. “Through their commitment to filmmaking, this year’s exceptionally talented class has made significant contributions to our global movie industry.”
Notable Invitees and Their Achievements
Elordi received his first Oscar nomination earlier this year for his transformative role as the Creature in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. Ortega has gained considerable attention with record-breaking viewership for the series Wednesday and is set to appear in the forthcoming film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun.
Stephen Fry represents a more seasoned presence among this year’s invitees. Best known for his work in British television, Fry has appeared in over a dozen Hollywood films, including Gosford Park, V for Vendetta, and Love & Friendship. He earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for the 1998 film Wilde and has hosted the BAFTA awards twelve times.
The list also includes Josh O’Connor, who was nominated this year for Best Supporting Actress but lost to Amy Madigan in Weapons. Jon Bernthal, known for his role in the Netflix hit Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and recent appearances in Steven Spielberg’s projects, is also invited.
Additional creatives invited include Mia Goth, who co-starred with Elordi in Frankenstein, and Teyana Taylor, recently seen on Broadway and slated for summer releases including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film.
Other notable names from this year’s Oscar race include director and actor Zach Cregger, as well as the K-Pop Demon Hunters co-directors Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang, alongside singing star Ejae.
Academy Membership Growth and Diversity
If all invitations are accepted, the Academy’s total membership will reach 11,319, with the number of voting members increasing to 10,338. This expansion would result in 36% of members being women, 25% from underrepresented communities, and 22% international members.
Recent Academy Policy Updates
The Oscars recently announced new rules ahead of the 2027 awards season, including a ban on acting and writing awards for work created by artificial intelligence and allowing performers to receive multiple nominations in the same category.
Last year, the Academy extended invitations to Stephen Graham, Jodie Comer, and Ariana Grande, among others.
