Collaboration Origins

Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody has revealed that the band's forthcoming single with Kylie Minogue was "always destined" to be a collaboration. He initially wrote the song with the Australian singer in mind.

Lightbody explained that after learning Minogue was seeking new material, he composed several songs hoping one would reach her.

"I'm a long-term fan, who isn't, of Kylie?" he said.
"When I heard that Kylie was looking for a song, I wrote her a bunch, but then I couldn't get them to her."

Since the songs did not reach Minogue initially, Snow Patrol decided to record one of the tracks themselves. Internally, the song was referred to as "Kylie" throughout the recording process.

"I wrote the songs and they were all just called Kylie 1, Kylie 2, Kylie 3," Lightbody said.

Upon completing the track, Lightbody felt something was missing, which he identified as Minogue's contribution.

"And that was obviously Kylie."

The band eventually succeeded in sending the song to Minogue, who agreed to record vocals for it.

Recording and Reception

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster's Good Morning Ulster programme, Lightbody shared the positive outcome of the collaboration.

"It turns out she loved it and then she sang on it."
"The song felt finished for the first time because her vocal is absolutely extraordinary."
"I guess it was always destined to be a song, maybe not for Kylie, but with Kylie."

Minogue recorded her vocals with her own producer before sending them to Snow Patrol.

Lightbody commented on the synergy between their voices.

"They do work really well together," he said.
"Everybody involved put a lot of love into it, and I think that comes across."

Regarding the possibility of future collaborations, Lightbody stated:

Recent Performances and Milestones

Lightbody also reflected on Snow Patrol's recent live performances, describing their summer shows as "brilliant."

He highlighted a performance in Liverpool city centre that attracted tens of thousands of attendees and expressed anticipation for an upcoming show at Edinburgh Castle.

20th Anniversary of Eyes Open

Lightbody discussed the 20th anniversary of Snow Patrol's breakthrough album Eyes Open, released in 2006. The album became the band's most successful record, featuring hits such as "Chasing Cars," "You're All I Have," and "Open Your Eyes."

Eyes Open topped the UK Albums Chart and has sold millions of copies worldwide.

The band has been commemorating this milestone during recent live shows, with many of the album's well-known tracks remaining central to their setlist.

Songwriting and Future Collaborations

Lightbody also spoke about the collaborative songwriting process, noting that many songs written with other artists do not reach the public.

"There have been quite a few ones where I really thought it would have made the album, but it didn't," he said.
"Unfortunately, the secrets of those will have to go with me to the grave."

Looking ahead, Lightbody identified singer-songwriter Raye as his ideal future collaborator.

"I think she has the most extraordinary voice on planet Earth right now," he said.

He also praised Minogue's longevity and musical evolution throughout her career.

"I think she doesn't just stay in one lane or make the same music over and over again," Lightbody said.
"She follows her heart, and I have a lot of respect for that type of artistry."
